Gallup reports that employee engagement statistics are staggeringly low — 30% in the US and 13% worldwide. Even worse, scores have remained low for over a decade. It reminds me of a story from my Leadership in Organizations class called, “The Banana.”

The Banana (fictional story)

The Banana is a story about a group monkeys under a stairwell. Someone places bananas at the top of the stairs. It doesn’t take long before one of the monkeys makes a break for the stairs. During the monkey’s attempt to climb the stairs, the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water.

This process repeats anytime a monkey…

Business Case: Predicting admission outcomes, when resources and time are limited.

Purpose: Predicting which applicants will complete their application for admission. The result will help focus recruitment efforts more effectively and efficiently; especially helpful in a time crunch. Find patterns within data.

Methods: Logit and sensitivity analysis

Part 1 — Logit Analysis of Completed Admissions and Variables:

Business Case: Collaboration has its proven benefits. It can lead to new products, new processes and innovative ideas. But can too much become a hindrance? We looked into quantifiable measurements of collaboration, such as total number of emails and meetings, to better understand their effect on the productivity of a hardware manufacturer’s sales team.

Details: An automated hardware manufacturer noticed the sales team of over 200 salespersons had uncharacteristically uneven results. They sought out their people analytics team to boost/increase sales and productivity.

Purpose: Detect patterns, recommend actionable solutions based on data

Methods: Correlation, regression modeling, scatterplots and histograms

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was directed by Michael Gondry, who worked on the story with Charlie Kaufman and Pierre Bismuth. It was his second film, and second collaboration with screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. The film was released in 2004 and received very favorable reviews, becoming one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year. This movie was released in North America on March 19, 2004. The movie grossed more than $70 million worldwide. Eternal Sunshine stars Jim Carrey, an unlikely candidate for a romantic science-fiction dramedy, and Kate Winslet.

Business case: Measure Effectiveness of Past Campaigns on Google Analytics

Details: Syracuse University, Whitman School of Management Google Ads; predicting future ad costs based on historical data.

Methods: We measured the effectiveness of 4 previous campaigns based on timeframe, clicks, CPC, sessions, bounce rate and pages/session. We also used predictive analytics to project campaign costs into the future.

In this article, we looked at the overall effectiveness of four ad campaigns. How did the campaigns compare to one another? Which one was the most effective?

The table (below) provides a concise view of the dates, cost, and effectiveness of four…

Business case: Predicting future book sales, based on changing book costs and sales prices, by using historical figures

Goal: Optimize/maximize profits

Methods: Power regression analysis, optimization with constraints

In order to optimize the profit of book sales, based on the constraints of minimum books sold and price, we analyzed different scenarios to pick the best way forward. The selling price of a book will change the percentage of books sold. To see this visually, we can graph the projected sales based on historical data on an author.

How will book price affect profit? What are the estimated sales predictions? …
